Fundamentals 101, 102, 103:
March 23 - May 27

Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:30 am - 1:00 pm, 10 weeks

Tuition: Each ten week session is $550. Class size: 16

We will be accepting students as independent study students on an individual basis depending on enrollment in the Fundamentals 101,102 and 103 classes. Please contact either instructor for more information.

Note: All classes meet in the same room at the same time.

  1. This course is vital to all students wishing to pursue successful art careers, as well as students who wish to improve their drawing and painting skills. The course begins with Fundamentals 101, which stresses drawing and composition, then continues with Fundamentals 102, stressing color theory and application. In 103 students put into practice theories and applications learned in the 101 and 102 classes through several landscape painting studies.
  2. Each assignment is designed specifically for both beginning fine art students as well as intermediate students. This course covers the basics of color theory and practice, composition, linear perspective, and many of the various techniques of painting.
  3. Following the tradition of the Academy method of instruction, all three levels are taught in the same classroom, which encourages reinforcement of theories and practices within all levels.

Due to limited classroom space, this class is limited to 16 students. Priority will be given to students who have completed Fun. 101 or 102. To reserve a place in the class, tuition must be paid in full.

Bob Krajecki started his art studies with the Famous Artists Correspondence course from Westport, Conn. Drafted into the United States Army Aircorps during the Vietnam conflict, he became the staff artist for the “Army Flyer” newspaper. He continued his studies at the American Academy of Art and the Chicago Academy of Fine Art in Chicago, receiving his degree in watercolor painting. Upon graduation, Bob pursued a fine art career and exhibited his paintings throughout the Chicagoland area. He started teaching classes in Downers Grove and in Lyons. Bob started teaching full-time at the American Academy of Art in 1972, teaching classes in the fundamentals of art, watercolor painting, architectural illustration, cartooning and Adobe Photoshop. He was chosen as the first chairman of the Fundamentals program when the Academy introduced the Bachelor of Arts program. Bob is currently teaching classes at the Palette and Chisel Academy and at the Kaneville Community Center in the Fox Valley Area and does demonstration painting and workshops throughout the Chicagoland area.

Dale Popovich – Of the many ways one might describe Dale Popovich, visionary may be most apt, for talent and ability aside – it is the quality of Popovich’s vision that defines his work.

Temporarily blinded at 20, Popovich had only his visual memories to keep him company. And he learned to pare down the images until what remained – and stayed with him – were the essences of what he remembered. This purity of vision is realized through a rare selectivity of detail that gives each painting uncommon strength.

Popovich paints the Midwest in keenly perceived landscapes that celebrate Nature and Man’s humble attempts to tame it. Every painting is vivid in his mind’s eye; he paints from this vision rather than from life. By mentally wandering the scene, he breathes dimension into the paper with a strong, moody interplay of light and dark…and a true colorist’s eye into the scene, bridges by which virtually everyone can follow. We are pleased to offer you this experience. And we hope you will be as stirred by it as we are.

Popovich has a degree in Fine Art from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He has devoted 25 years of teaching numerous fine art and graphic design courses in the Heartland. He currently illustrates for two national magazines, Water Gardening and Midwest Gardening.

Discover the limitless world of color, particularly the myriad hues found “under the lights”. Phil will help you discover how to “push” color as you develop a more impressionistic style in your oil and pastel paintings. Working both from the model and with still lifes, Phil uses dramatic lighting to bring out sparkling color in each and every subject. Using his lifelong experience as a sought after illustrator, Phil works closely with each student to help them create paintings that truly stand out. Not every individual studio has the luxury of natural north light. Phil’s techniques of painting under artificial light will guide you to better usage of your own personal studio.

Most of his life, Phil has been an illustrator/graphic designer with his own studio in Chicago’s loop. He developed a large creative range for the demands of his clientele including Amoco Oil, Encyclopedia Britannica, Rand McNally, Sears, and Walgreens.

He has exhibited throughout the country and has won numerous awards. A cover story about him appeared in American Artist magazine. He also participated on a television panel show on portraiture, “American Art Forum with Richard Love”. His works continue to be part of numerous collections to this day. Recently, Phil received another honor, the prestigious Gold Medal of Excellence from the Municipal Art League of Chicago.

Phil has taught his information- packed oil painting class at the Palette & Chisel for several years. Now he is combining his new pastel class for students who prefer an even wider range in working with these two fine media. Or, they can choose either one in the same class. An active, hands-on professional, Phil’s students love when he not only describes, but actually picks up their materials and shows them how to do it. Join him now to take advantage of his vast experience with design, composition and color value relationships with these exciting media. Popular among fine artists, dabblers and beginners alike, Phil is often asked to do lecture/painting demonstrations, and has been invited as a juror for art competitions. He is also available as a private tutor to serious, dedicated students.
