The Art of Antonio Mancini
July 21 through August 8, 3 weeks
Monday - Friday
8:00 am - 2:30 pm
Tuition: $600 per week or $1600 for all 3 weeks

The work of Antonio Mancini has captivated painter and public alike. The recent retrospective show of his work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art was a resounding success. Palette & Chisel members as well as painters around the country including Richard Schmid and wife Nancy flocked to the show in droves to see this Italian master's work. In the past we have studied Mancini and how he handled edges, this year I plan to concentrate on all aspects of Antonio Mancini from his unique compositions, his controlled use of color to impact the psychological aspects of a painting, and his many techniques including his masterful use of edges. While we will study his use of the “graticola”, his unique use of a web of string through which he studied his subject; we will not make one for class room use, but it will be discussed.

To prepare for this class I visited the show and while I photographed the work, I also spent hours in front of each painting with a hand held tape recorder analyzing each work. We will work my observations into teaching aspects during the class. Observations that others have shared with me including those of Jeremy Lipking, Tony Pro, Richard and Nancy will also become part of our intense study of this master.

While the course will emphasize Mancini's portrait techniques, we will also visit and work on figurative compositions and techniques during our three weeks.

Antonio Mancini's work was introduced to me by Schmid in the 80s. Richard told me of his influence on his own early work. Mancini is held in the highest regard by most painters; Schmid and even Sargent were no exception. Sargent considered Mancini the greatest living painter and owned several originals which he displayed proudly and is said to have never past without considering them.

While we will concentrate on Mancini, we will also work Sargent and Fechin into the course spending some time on their technique and comparing and contrasting their methods with Mancini’s.

Oil Painting Still Life Workshop
Marci Oleszkiewicz (
bio)

September 8 - 11
Monday - Thursday, 9 am - 4 pm
$295 non-members, $270 members

This workshop is for beginning and advanced students of all ages. We will have four days to complete two small paintings or one large painting. Beginning with initial thumbnail sketches to final paintings, students will learn the process of working out an idea into a finished painting. Learning from the still life is an excellent starting point to begin to see as a painter. It is also a challenge to the advanced student as they begin to see more, and experiment with different ways of approaching a painting. The focus will be on design and composition, as well as drawing, values, and edges. Students are encouraged to bring in their own still life objects to paint.
