Taking a weekend off and hiding out on the third floor of the P&C is a unique way of vacationing, as many art practitioners have found. In recent years, the P&C has hosted workshops conducted by many nationally known artists.

Portrait Painting in Oil
November 3 - 6, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Monday - Thursday
Tuition: $395 with a shared model fee
During this challenging 4-day workshop, we will focus on basics through the advanced elements of constructing the human head. We will break down the head into its abstract planes and learn how to mass in quickly and accurately, establishing the temperature and effects of light immediately. And overall – we’ll focus on capturing the “spirit” of your subject. Heavy emphasis will be placed on Composition, Drawing, Color Harmonies, Lighting –as well as capturing emotional content. The workshop will also touch on the business side of portraiture: Working with clients, establishing relationships, getting paid, etc.

This workshop will feature both short and long pose charcoal drawings from life models. Line, shape and massing will be introduced and practiced in class. Students will also be encouraged to find their own way of seeking beauty from each pose, and interpret what they find with their personal artistic approach instead of just copying.
The workshop will include different charcoal techniques, demonstrations and individual critiques.
